A large woods fire challenged Gamber and neighboring firefighters Friday evening.
Gamber firefighters were alerted for a woods and brush fire at approximately 5:30 pm Friday evening. Units responding saw large columns of smoke and requested additional assistance from neighboring companies. The location was off Nicholson Rd. which is off of Nicodemus Rd.
Access and challenging terrain made the task difficult and extended the incident. Approximately 5-6 acres of woods were involved and firefighters used hand tools, chain saws, and hand lines to manage the fire. Water supply was set up on Nicholson Rd. and large diameter hose was used to supply the units at the scene. Assistant Chief Shawn Chenoweth had command.
Brush trucks, tankers, and engines from Sykesville Freedom District Fire Dept., Winfield & Community Volunteer Fire Dept., and Reese & Community Volunteer Fire Co., assisted. Hampstead Engine 23 filled in the Gamber station.
Units cleared and were back in service at the station at approximately 10:00 pm. DNR State Forestry is currently investigating and Carroll County Fire Police assisted.
